14 1/2 lb. 4" beard 3/8 spurs Jake Special thanks to Jay Wagner, my hunting partner on this trip to Vermont. Although we both were discouraged in the lack of visual birds, we enjoyed the trip. Jay and I traveled 990 miles on this journey, almost 700 miles of scouting and glassing fields and hillsides, which produced very few birds. Turkeys in Vermont are at a record low in this State and the Vermont DF&W expects another poor hatching year this season. Although Vermont boasts a two bird limit , the success ratio statewide is extremely low, for a State that permits (2) two birds per hunter and no zoning restrictions or lottery. Check out these facts in the 2004 seasons in Maine and Vermont: Maine had 15,600 hunters with one (1) permit - Total birds taken 4,839
Vermont had 13,942 hunters all with two (2) tags - Total birds taken 3,925
There are no records on the VT website to show how many of the hunters, from the 3925 tagged birds, shot more than one bird. but regardless, the number is very low considering the 2 bird limit and the amount of hunters seeking them in that State. After the 700 miles of scouting fields and woods it was apparent to Jay and I that the numbers were very low.
We located a few hens and very few vocal gobblers in five days and 700 miles!

Vermont Scouting Trip April 14th-16th, 2005







With two full days of scouting Jay and I found several nice birds and some real prime hunting areas. We are hoping that in May we will see more active birds, as gobbling was very limited probably due to night temperatures in the low 20's.	The above Ruffed Grouse (Partridge) Was displaying there was a nearby Tom and a group of hens about 30 yards away from him. He appeared to be competing with the Tom! Very Unusual to see a Grouse displaying... We captured him on video... enjoy! Download Video of this Grouse in Full Strut
